BIOGRAPHY

Panna is a multi-instrumentalist and has been involved with various bands and projects. Although the bass guitar is his main duty in the band, he is primarily a pianist (he reached UNISA's grade 8 while still at school). He is also proficient in organ, flute, keyboards and percussion. He also studied classical guitar for three years.

He matriculated in 1993 and went overseas for a year. On his return he completed an Honnours Degree in Geographical Information Systems at the US. He was a member of Majuba's a cappela group for three years and in 1999 they secured second place at the National Competition held at RAU, Johannesburg.
After he graduated, he moved away from GIS and into Oracle and Web Development, which he specialises in today. He worked in the United Kingdom for about two years and, after his return, started the acoustic rock and folk band MiME with Jo Ellis and Frans Haasbroek. He fooled around with Jo's fretless bass one afternoon and got to grips with the basics quickly.
He later formed the rock band Fuse with Jo, SC Pienaar and Sheldon Muller. This venture only lasted a few months, mainly due to artistic issues between the members. The split of Fuse was very unpleasent and Panna decided to stop making music altogether. He sold his instruments and began to work full-time as a Web Developer.

In 2004, Panna was asked to play live bass for Willim Welsyn, an Afrikaans singer/songwriter. He enjoyed the vibe very much and realised how much he actually missed making music and playing live. He joined forces with Willim soon after, toured with the Melktert Kommissie, aquired a drummer and started a new band called Willim Welsyn and the Sunrise Toffies. However, as time wore on, Panna realised that he was outgrowing the band. After long consideration, he finally quit Willim Welsyn middle 2006 and joined forces once more with Jo Ellis.

Panna is responsible for the bass duties as well as backing vocals. The band does play the occasional acoustic show, during which he plays acoustic guitar too. His bass playing style, which combines the guitar and drum rhythms with very fast downstrokes, provides a solid backbone for Jo's electric guitars. But there are also times when Panna basically has to play rhythm guitar on the bass guitar while still providing the bass line. This occurs during Jo's solos. His technique also involves playing with a pick and his fingers silmutaneously.

He lives in Ladismith and works full time developing websites. He listens to a wide variety of music (no jazz though!) , with classical music and hard rock his favourites. If he could choose a different career, he would become a Vetenarian.
